ODK Buddy — Hudl Sync Chrome Extension · Last updated: May 12, 2026
What This Extension Does
The ODK Buddy — Hudl Sync extension connects the ODK Buddy football play-tracking web app with Hudl's video platform in your browser. It enables real-time, cross-device synchronization between the ODK Buddy tracker (on your phone/tablet) and Hudl video playback (on your computer).
Data We Collect
This extension collects and transmits the minimum data necessary for its sync functionality:
- Hudl team ID — Extracted from your Hudl page URL to identify the sync room. This is used solely to pair your devices.
- Clip navigation commands — Play number and navigation actions (next clip, previous clip) sent between your devices via our relay server.
- Active tab URL — Checked locally to determine whether you are on a Hudl page or the ODK Buddy app. The URL is never stored or transmitted beyond your browser.
Data We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect personal information (name, email, address).
- We do not collect Hudl login credentials or session cookies through the extension.
- We do not collect browsing history or activity on sites other than hudl.com and hudldata.vercel.app.
- We do not collect video content, play-by-play data, or any Hudl account data.
- We do not use analytics, tracking pixels, or any third-party tracking services.
How Data Is Transmitted
Sync commands are relayed through our server at hudl-mcp-production.up.railway.app using Server-Sent Events (SSE). Relay messages are ephemeral — they are forwarded in real time and are not stored on the server. The relay server does not require authentication; sync rooms are identified by Hudl team ID only.
Data Storage
The extension uses Chrome's local storage API (chrome.storage.local) to remember your connection state and sync room ID. This data stays on your device and is never transmitted to any server. You can clear it at any time by removing the extension.
Third-Party Services
The extension interacts with two external services:
- hudl.com — The extension injects a content script on Hudl pages to enable clip navigation and display a voice-tag overlay. It does not modify, extract, or transmit any Hudl data.
- hudl-mcp-production.up.railway.app — Our relay server that forwards real-time sync commands between your devices.
Permissions Explained
- activeTab — Needed to detect when you're on a Hudl or ODK Buddy page.
- tabs — Needed to identify Hudl tabs for content script communication.
- storage — Needed to persist sync room and connection state locally.
- alarms — Needed to maintain the background sync connection.
- Host permissions (hudl.com, hudldata.vercel.app, Railway) — Needed to inject content scripts and communicate with the relay server.
Children's Privacy
This extension is intended for use by football coaches and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
